About Me
I grew up in rural Hawkes Bay on a sheep farm. Growing up on a farm gave me a lot of practical skills and the ability to think quickly and solve problems. I had always wanted to go into a profession that required skilful use of hands and a professional training I was torn between Veterinary and dentistry. In the end I chose dentistry and know I made the right decision. I graduated from Dental School (Otago University) in 1976 and have continued my dental education ever since. The journey is exciting and continues.
From the end of 1976 to the end of 1979 I worked in Auckland. In 1979 I decided it was time to do my O.E and travel to the U.K. for a two year work experience I left with one suitcase. My two years some how lasted for ten years working in Slough for that whole time. I returned in 1989 with an Australian wife and baby son.
Now with over 30 years of experience in dentistry the journey of learning has been both fun, and fantastic.
I could never have believed that when I stepped into the real word of dental practice 30 years ago that 30 years later, I would be doing computer generated dental fillings and crowns , be doing amalgam free dentistry , and in fact have adopted the philosophy of being very anti amalgam.
The technologies that modern dentistry has to offer are both challenging and exciting. In 2001 I became a founding member of The Word Congress of Minimal intervention dentistry and became a Fellow of the Word Congress. I was one of the early uses of the Biolase water laser in New Zealand
I have membership of the following organizations:
• IAMFD – International Association of Mercury Free Dentists
• NZAOMT- New Zealand Association Oral medicine and Toxicology (Mercury Free Dentistry in N.Z)
• WCMID- World Congress of Minimal Intervention Dentistry
• NZMID- New Zealand Academy of Minimal intervention Dentistry (Founding Member)
• NZ ACD- New Zealand Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry
• IAMA- Australasian Integrative Medicine Association
• NZDA- New Zealand Dental Association
TRUISMS I AM RENOWNED TO REPEAT
1. Dental disease IS PAINLESS until it has gone too far.
2. The longer you leave it THE BIGGER THE MESS
3. It is easier to treat a small cavity early (for both the patient and dentist), than an advanced cavity later.
THE JOURNEY OF LEARNING CONTINUES...
